Sto Kapaki is two places in one - cafe and restaurant.
You will find this unique place in the historical center of Kalamata (the old part of the city), see Map, and we provide a cozy and warm atmosphere, delicious food and a very original environment.

In the morning hours and afternoons you can enjoy a coffee, beer or drink - outdoors or indoors.

In the evening our outstanding kitchen will amaze you, based on excellent, traditional greek ingredients and prepared and served with the personal style, humor and fantasy of our untraditional host. Read more about our Philosophy under or take a glimpse at our Menu here.

Sto Kapaki means in direct translation "On the lid", but it can also mean "continuation". The fact is that most of our food is made under the lid, or in the oven. If you are looking for the traditional grilled and fried food, you better look elsewhere. We have neither souvlaki nor French fries.

In Kapaki however, you will find lovely dishes, the way the modern Greeks like it. Everything is made with fresh ingredients, and the host is very particular when he handpicks the best of everything from tomatoes to meat. In Kalamata we enjoy the luxury of having available to us the best olive oil and olives in the world, and the chef make no compromise when he chose the ones with the better taste and quality. The olive oil is an important base for the fusion inspiration kitchen, as is the lovely, fresh greek vegetables - according to season. An essential part of the ingredients are locally and/or ecologically produced, which insure excellent and outstanding taste. A whole range of fresh herbs and spices are used, and some dishes are hot, some are not! Salt is avoided, but available to the preference of the customer. The dishes are always served in a way pleasing to the eye, and the salads are Kapaki's especiality, made on the spot. You can have the traditional Greek salad, served with a twist, but we especially recommend the Kapaki Mixed Salad, after tasting it, you will be hooked!

Anyway, the level of prices are reasonable, you can have a dinner with wine for € 15. Excellent food does not have to be expensive! Most of the main dishes cost around € 9-12, and is the plates are generous and inviting. Have a look at the menu to get an impression about what we can offer, but be aware that we don't have a fixed menu. It changes according to the seasons, and the mood of the chef!

Sto Kapaki locals are small and intimate, and has only eight tables in-door. If you want to make sure you will be able to find one, give us a call and make a reservation, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays this might be necessary, see Contact. Our guests always notice the personal and homely invironment, with grandmother's plate collection, greek houshold antiques and old toys. It's a creative and somewhat kaotic mix that is in perfect balance with the owners taste and the guests likings.

At our entrance to the pedestrian street Amfeias, just next to the famous Agii Apostoloi church, we have a few small tables. It is a lovely, cool place to sit in the evenings, and has a very laid back and enjoyable environment, in a part of town that is reckoned to be of the most interesting and picturesque.

Our choice of music in the evening could be anything from jazz, soul, funk to 60-70 rock. Greek music might also be heard, usually in daytime. Note that the level of noise in most Greek serving places, as in ours, is unfamiliar to most foreigners. Do not expect this to be a quiet place; it is lively, noisy, but very authentic!

Sto Kapaki is the project of the very original, autodidact chef Thanasis Vrionis, a well known figure in Kalamata since his birth in the late 50's. Except from his delicious food, he is famous locally for is all present sense of humor, his great knowledge and interest in soul, funk, rock and rebetiko, his big motorcycles and his characteristic hairstyle, that once upon a time actually was the reason for his nickname "Mao".

Thanasis has some help from his Norwegian wife Toya, mainly in tasting the food, which she does with great pleasure, in making this web site and taking care of the finances, and otherwise minding her own business - literally speaking...

We wish to see you soon in Sto Kapaki!
